It’s a simple fact. Every leader has numerous ideas that they want to execute and can feel frustrated when it doesn’t happen as quickly as they would like.
So today, we’re going to talk about how you can get your ideas into motion and not get stuck when you’re presented with an amazing new idea because you have too much on your plate and are juggling too many balls.
First let me tell you about Debbie (not her real name), although I know she will recognise herself in this story 😊
Debbie is simply brilliant. Her capacity for ideas, executing them and still looking as if she’s step out of the a fashion shoot with Vogue, is just phenomenal.
This belies the fact she works hard to juggle many competing priorities. It was interesting that she used the image used here in one of her posts recently to summarise how she’s feeling.
Her secret (although she doesn’t always give herself credit for it)? She knows how to work collaboratively to get things done.
She knows exactly what her strengths are, but is also unashamedly open to input, ideas and asking for help when needed.
Basically she’s the antithesis of a control freak!
A major reason so many business leaders struggle to bring new ideas to fruition is because they ask the wrong question after having a new idea.
For example, you may think, “Oh, this new idea is exciting. I really want that. Now how do I do it?”
However, this is the wrong question.
If you ask yourself HOW to do it, you create a picture in your mind yourself actually achieving the result.
The problem? You don’t always have the capacity or capability to get the new result, or it’s going to require a lot of your time and energy.
The real question you need to ask is, “WHO? Who do I need to make this new idea happen?”
When you shift from an “I need to achieve this on my own” mindset to a “We will achieve this” mindset, you free up your time and energy. You’ll find that most of the capabilities required to get the new result fall within other people’s capabilities.
By bypassing “HOW can I make this happen?” you can identify “WHO will help me make this happen?”
Who do you need to be part of your team to achieve this new result? Maybe you need a team to work with you, or just one person? Perhaps it’s a technical or subject matter expert, or it could be a strategic partner?
As a leader your role is clearly and simply to communicate what the result looks like and the purpose of it.
Instead of feeling frustrated, you feel excited and confident that you have the right people working to execute your idea.
So, who are the WHOs that you need to connect with today?
There are so many possibilities that open up when you don’t get bogged down in the HOW and you can focus on the WHO.
This also means you need to trust others, be open to their ideas and willing to let go rather than demanding that everything is done your way.
No matter how much you might think of yourself as superman or superwoman, the reality is you won’t be able to do everything, so it’s critical that you find the WHOs that will help you get there.
Just thinking….
